The beginning of March means time to celebrate a famous author. Many of you have emailed me asking about my free unit I posted last year about this particular author. Unfortunately, the corporation in charge of the publications of this author has put a stop to ALL products containing his name or book titles. This includes all clipart as well. {Yes...you will still be able to find some items out there, but it is actually illegal and I'm not willing to take a chance.}
So, I cannot give you the organizers or writing papers we used last week, but I will show you some pictures of some activities we completed.
This is one of my favorite writing activities to complete after reading "Oh, the Places You'll Go." The students write about what they want to do when they grow up and we make hot air balloons.
We learned all about alliterations and tongue twisters after reading "Oh Say Can You Say?"
We came up with sentences about each student together as a class. Then, each student wrote their sentence on a strip of paper, rolled it up, and attached it to their picture to show their "twisted tongues."
We made this anchor chart while reading The Lorax.
After reading The Foot Book, we discussed antonyms. {This idea came from The First Grade Parade.} I passed out an index card with a word to each student. Each card had an antonym pair and the students had to find their partner. Then each person traced their foot and cut it out. They wrote their word and illustrated it.
One another note, I updated my Spring Fluency packet as well as my March, April, and May packets to include the Common Core Standards. If you have already purchased any of these packets, just click on the pictures below to go and download your Common Core Correlated version.
{The Spring packet includes the March, April, and May packets...60 fluency passages in all.}
You can see in the picture below that the standards being addressed on the fluency page as well as the supplemental language arts page {not pictured below} are posted in the top right corner.
Here are the March, April, and May packets.
One more update for you...my March Poems and Songs now includes the fluency strips.
Now...if you've stuck with me that entire time, I will be giving away three Spring Fluency packets. Just be a follower of my blog, TpT store, and Facebook page. Once you are a follower of all three, leave me a comment. I will randomly pick three winners on Wednesday.

Jodi-
ReplyDeleteI have been a big fan and follower of your blog for quite a while! You have such great ideas! It has been so helpful as I transitioned from 5th to first the year and am the only first grade teacher in the building... Yikes!!! I love the alliteration activity you did with the kids! I follow all three as well :) I was wondering, do you use the fluency pages to listen to students read or do you have them read them alone and answer the questions then have them take them home and read them. Are you giving a grade on them and how and at what point? Love all your stuff. Bought both of your math strategy packets and LOVE them. Thanks for all your hard work!
ReplyDeletewiardmolly@yahoo.com
We do them together and complete the questions together. Then they take them home to practice.

ReplyDeleteHello! I am your newest follower. I found you through the TPT newsletter. I think what you did was amazing! I was also connected to you in the fact that I was a Special Education and Elementary Education major at ISU also. I even did a placement at Deming Elementary! I am looking forward to following your blog and seeing what great ideas you have. Maybe we can work together in the future on something blog or educationally related.
