Blog Lovin' and Five for Friday

 First off, you've probably heard by now that Google Reader is going away on July 1st.  Many people need a new way to read through all of their blogs. {If you've never read blogs using Google Reader, no worries for you.}  Well, welcome to Bloglovin'.  I kept hearing about it, but never got around to doing anything with it until last week.  I downloaded the app on my phone and it's great!  I can read all of the blogs I follow anytime I want.
Here's the deal...if you hurry before July 1st, you can import all of your blogs from Google Reader.  It was really easy!  If you miss the July 1st deadline, no big deal, but you'll have to follow all of your favorite blogs again.

2.  My girls had Vacation Bible School this week.
This was the first year that my youngest was able to attend.  They love it!  And...it's 3 hours of free time for me every morning.  Oh my goodness!  I almost didn't know what to do with myself...almost.

3. Which brings us to number 3 for the week.  Did you know that people go to coffee shops, drink coffee, and work on their computers...for long periods of time?  I kind of always wanted to be one of those people and this week ,I was that person!  {I have to say, I could definitely not be that person all the time, but maybe once a week would be nice.}
So, I accomplished a lot this week.  I finished my entire year of morning work!
 I also started working on some more themes of Communication folders.  Here is my latest.


4.  This past Wednesday was my 9 year anniversary!
I am a very lucky gal!

5.  My girls had their first swim lesson this week.
How I wish we had a pool where they could practice, but unfortunately that is not that case.  They LOVED it and can't wait to go back.

Communication Folders

Do you use a Communication Folder in your classroom?  I began using one two years ago and I LOVE IT!  It's a great way to keep your students organized and to make sure you are in constant contact with the parents. 
Last year, our school wide theme was space, so I created this SPACE book.
 
Here are some pictures of my binders from last year.
I used 3 ring binders last year and they lasted the entire year.  Each week, I put in our new spelling words and weekly focus.  This stays in the binder throughout the week.  I replace it on Monday.

 
I place the student's homework in the folder and they return it the next morning back in the folder.  There is also a section of lined paper so if the parents need to write a note or I need to write to them, we know exactly where to look. {Not pictured}
 
 In the front of each binder, I place a pencil case.  This is for lunch money or important items that need to get to school safely.
 
The year before last, I used this SAFARI book for our jungle theme.
 
This year our theme is Hollywood, so fortunately I already have this STAR book made for this school year.
 
Each communication book includes:

- "What is a ______ book? and Rules page
- Contact Information and Daily Schedule
- Letter to Families
- Contract
- Spelling Word Sheet
- Math Review Sheet
- Sight Word Lists
- Weekly Focus Page
- Labels for Folders

Almost all of the pages can be edited to fit your needs.

Common Core Morning Work for the ENTIRE year!!

I know, I know...I'm posting twice in the same day.  This never happens, but it's for a really good reason.  I FINALLY finished all of my morning work packets!!!  Can you hear that BIG sigh of relief!?!  I cannot even tell you how excited I am to have the entire year finished!!
 
This packet includes 550 pages!!!!  Oh my goodness!  This is a zipped file that includes each month's morning work in its own folder. 
 
If you're unfamiliar with my morning work, each day contains two versions of the same morning work.  The first version is for the below level students and the second version is for the at grade level or above grade level students.  They look very similar and most students will not even notice the difference.  The third page for each day can be copied onto the back of the page.  This is a sight word practice page.  Students can work on sight word fluency.

 I started creating and using this morning work last year in November.  I loved that my students were getting some much needed review every morning and they knew exactly what to do because the format stayed the same throughout the year.

Calendar Linky

I'm participating in another Summer Linky Party.
This one is about Calendar Time!!  This is one of my favorite times of the day.  I have done calendar at all times throughout the day through the years.  I've done it first thing in the morning, mid morning, before lunch and after lunch. I still haven't quite figured out which time is my favorite, but no matter when you do it, it's an important time of day!


Last year, we did calendar right after recess and lunch.  The students came into the room and had a seat on the carpet.

One student is the "Calendar Person" for the week.  First, this person changes the date and the "Today is..." sentence.
We read the sentence together and talk about any important dates that may be coming up.  We may talk about how many Friday's are in the month or how many days we have left until the next month.
Next, the student adds 1 cent to the coin count.  We add 1 cent each day.  We keep track in two different ways with money.  We count this together every day.
After the money count, we use our number grid to practice counting patterns.  We count by 10's, 5's, and 2's.  We begin the year starting with 0, but eventually we move to number patterns starting at any number.  We also talk about odd and even numbers.
The students also add a straw to our pocket chart to keep track of the days.  This is where we work with place value.
Up next, is our number sentence practice.
We use the "date number" to create number sentences.  {For example, the picture above was taken on April 10th, so we wrote number sentences to get to 10.}
I call 5-10 students to write a number sentence.  This is one of my favorite parts.  It is amazing how creative they get by the end of the school year.  A simple 5+5 answer at the beginning of the year is often replaced with something like 100-50+40-80 by the end of the year.  
Another important component of calendar time is reviewing our objectives for the day and week.  Our weekly focus chart is next to the calendar.  We review our spelling words, high frequency words, comprehension skills, math skills, etc. during calendar time.  We also go over our objective board to make sure the students know what they are learning and why.  
Now, it's time for our chapter book read loud.  We usually switch back and forth between Junie B. Jones and Ready Freddy by Abby Klein.  {I LOVE Ready Freddy books and so do the kids!}
After calendar, we head back to our seats to do our Math Notebooks.
I use many of the components from Cara's Calendar Companion.  We also use Anna's Math Journal Prompts during this time.
